This piece originally appeared in Michigan Quarterly Review a couple of years ago, and it found a second life on Sequestrum as part of their reprint series. The story will be appearing again in my book Black Magic Death Sphere: (Science) Fictions (Urban Farmhouse Press). The version in there will include footnotes grappling with recent revelations about Franco’s sexual misconduct. We didn’t know about that when this story was written. We also didn’t know about it when I submitted the story to Sequestrum. But we know now, and the next version of this story made public will account for that information.
